Characterization of a Y-Coupler and Its Impact on the Performance of Plastic Optical Fiber Links

Abstract: Couplers and splitters are common devices in single-mode and multi-mode glass fibers applications, where they perform a variety of functions. However, when switching to plastic optical fibers (POFs), there is a shortage of commercial devices, which are usually custom-made. The problem with these devices is that modal power distribution in POFs is easily modified by spatial disturbances that produce a localized strong power transfer between modes, thus changing their transmission properties. In this work, a com… Show more

“…In the absence of a monochromator, as was described in the procedure from [41], wavelength scanning was performed with the use of optical filter foils deployed in between the LED source and the side-emitting fiber, as illustrated in Figure 8b. This allowed for the acquisition of the output radiation power estimate for a discrete set of wavelengths, as listed in Table 1 alongside the spectral attenuation measures.…”

“…As illustrated, the proposed intra-oral sensor concept implements vertical coupling of the optical radiation into the fiber, resembling the topology of a T coupler [40,41]. Accordingly, the T-coupler spectral attenuation measures, expressed in terms of insertion loss, coupling ratio, and excess loss, are considered for spectral characterization of the proposed intra-oral sensor.…”
