Characterization of a T7-Like Lytic Bacteriophage (φSG-JL2) of Salmonella enterica Serovar Gallinarum Biovar Gallinarum

Abstract: SG-JL2 is a newly discovered lytic bacteriophage infecting Salmonella enterica serovar Gallinarum biovar Gallinarum but is nonlytic to a rough vaccine strain of serovar Gallinarum biovar Gallinarum (SG-9R), S. enterica serovar Enteritidis, S. enterica serovar Typhimurium, and S. enterica serovar Gallinarum biovar Pullorum. The SG-JL2 genome is 38,815 bp in length (GC content, 50.9%; 230-bp-long direct terminal repeats), and 55 putative genes may be transcribed from the same strand. Functions were assigned to 3… Show more

“…All three bacteriophages belong to the Caudovirales order, and their genomes do not show homology with any known gene involved in virulence, as determined after sequencing of their genomes (data not shown). Moreover, these bacteriophages are highly stable, as confirmed by the observation that their concentrations after a 30-min incubation at pH 2 decreased by a maximum of 3.4 log 10 PFU/ml (data not shown), which is better than the values reported by other authors (17,19). These results suggest that the three bacteriophages are able to resist passage through the low-pH environment of the stomach.…”

“…One-step growth analysis of phage SPN9CC revealed a longer latency period and a smaller burst size than those of other lytic phages, such as T7-like Podoviridae family phages (Fig. 5A) (59)(60)(61), suggesting that lysogen formation during phage infection may affect the host cell lysis activity of phage SPN9CC. A high frequency of observed mutants insensitive to this phage during a bacterial challenge test also supports this (see Fig.…”
