Characterization of a subfamily of related winged helix genes, XFD-12/12′/12″ (XFLIP), during Xenopus embryogenesis

Abstract: The fork head domain family of genes defines a growing group of proteins that serve important regulatory functions in pattern-forming events of both invertebrates and vertebrates. Here we add three closely related, novel members to this family in Xenopus laevis, termed XFD-12, XFD-12' and XFD-12". All three genes reveal indistinguishable expression patterns during Xenopus embryogenesis. During gastrulation, XFD-12 type transcripts are detected exclusively in the superficial layer of cells within the Spemann or… Show more

“…This more restricted expression pattern suggests that the two flotillin1 paralogues may be under the control of different regulatory regions in the genome. Where different paralogues have been identified in Xenopus laevis, similar small differences in expression patterns have been reported (e.g., for FoxD5: Solter et al, 1999;Fetka et al, 2000;Sullivan et al, 2001). …”

“…During gastrula stages, Xfd12 is expressed in ventral/medial neural precursors (Solter et al, 1999). During early gastrulation, robust convergent extension reorganizes the neural plate , and these movements are very closely paralleled by the expression pattern of Xfd12 (Fetka et al, 2000).…”

“…Geminin, Foxd4l1, Neogenin, Sox3, Zic1 and Zic3 probes were prepared via PCR amplification of published coding regions from cDNA, adding a bacteriophage T7 promoter to the 3Ј end: xGeminin (Kroll et al, 1998;McGarry and Kirschner, 1998), xFoxd4l1 (Sölter et al, 1999;Sullivan et al, 2001), xNeogenin (Anderson and Holt, 2002), xSox3 (Denny et al, 1992;Penzel et al, 1997), xZic1 (Kuo et al, 1998;Mizuseki et al, 1998;Nakata et al, 1998) and xZic3 (Nakata et al, 1997).
