Characterization of a Red Jungle Fowl by White Leghorn Backcross Reference Population for Molecular Mapping of the Chicken Genome

Abstract: A reference population designed for molecular genetic mapping of the chicken genome was produced by backcrossing a partially inbred Red Jungle Fowl (JF) line to a highly inbred White Leghorn (WL) line. The parental lines were chosen to maximize the expected genetic polymorphisms between them. Two full-sib F^ males, produced by crossing a JF male with a WL female, were each individually mated to about 10 WL females to produce 400 progeny. All the progeny were classified for segregation of three loci controlling… Show more

“…These results, together with the fact that the retention frequency of CPS1 was close to those for LANCL1 and NCKAP1, indicate that CPS1 resides on GGA7. This finding is consistent with the linkage analysis of CPS1 using the Kobe University resource family [8] and using the East Lancing reference population [3] performed in our laboratory (unpublished data). The localization of CPS1, LANCL1, and NCKAP1 on GGA7 suggests that the conservation of synteny exists in the chromosomal segment present on human chromosome (HSA) 2.…”

“…Briefly, the original East Lansing mapping population (EL) (Crittenden et al 1993) consisted of 52 animals derived from a backcross (BC 1 ) between a partially inbred Red Jungle fowl line and a highly inbred White Leghorn line. In the current study, the number of genotyped animals was extended to 88.…”

“…OLECULAR genetic maps will provide insight into the genome organization and chromosomal localization of cloned genes and also a framework for the identification and localization of major genes associated with economically important traits (Crittenden et al 1993). The rapid progress being made in the development of genetic maps for humans and mice has led to a recent boom in the construction of genome maps for many farm animals.…”
