Characterization of 19 novel cotton FLA genes and their expression profiling in fiber development and in response to phytohormones and salt stress

Abstract: Fasciclin-like arabinogalactan proteins (FLAs), a subclass of arabinogalactan proteins (AGPs), are usually involved in cell development in plants. To investigate the expression profiling as well as the role of FLA genes in fiber development, 19 GhFLA genes (cDNAs) were isolated from cotton (Gossypium hirsutum). Among them, 15 are predicted to be glycosylphosphatidylinositol anchored to the plasma membranes. The isolated cotton FLAs could be divided into four groups. Real-time quantitative reverse transcriptase… Show more

“…A study reported that GhAGP4 plays a role in fiber initiation and elongation of cotton, but its molecular mechanism in regulating fiber development still remains unclear (Li et al, 2010b). In our previous study, several fiber-preferential genes encoding FLAs were identified in cotton (Huang et al, 2008). In this study, we further demonstrate that cotton FLA1 is involved in fiber initiation and elongation.…”

“…Our previous study demonstrated the several GhFLAs were expressed at high levels in 5-to 20-DPA fibers (Huang et al, 2008). In addition, bioinformatic analysis indicated the presence of at least five classical AGP sequences in cotton fibers.…”

“…Similarly, previous studies have revealed that the transcripts of GhFLA1, GhFLA2, and GhFLA4 are accumulated at relatively high levels in fibers. As a result, the highest levels of GhFLA1 and GhFLA4 transcripts are detected in 10 DPA fibers, while GhFLA2 shows its highest expression level in 20 DPA fibers [33]. GaMYB2 transcripts are largely accumulated in 3-9 DPA fibers, and then decline with further fiber development [6].…”

“…These authors identified 5 different AGPs that were strongly repressed in salt treated tomato roots. Similarly, Huang et al analyzed the differential expression of 19 putative fasciclin-like proteins in Gossypium hirsutum in plants treated with different phytohormones and NaCl (Huang et al, 2008). These authors observed that several fasciclin-like proteins were down regulated by NaCl and ABA.…”
