Boric acid is a very important inorganic material with diverse uses in optoelectronics, petroleum industry, medicine, agriculture, etc. Recently, it was reported on the modification of the crystallization system of the triclinic boric acid (TBA) to hexagonal boric acid (HBA), when a special obtaining procedure is applied. In this paper, the thermokinetic stability of HBA novel material was comparatively studied with respect to the well-known TBA, in air flow atmosphere. Both HBA and TBA undergo a threestep overall thermal decomposition reaction (dehydration), following similar pathways; from the thermodynamic point of view HBA is more stable-decomposition temperatures and DH are higher in this case compared to those of TBA. The kinetic analysis was performed by means of the isoconversional methods, for each step of dehydration observing different thermokinetic regions. Higher thermal stability for HBA enables it to be employed at higher temperatures instead of TBA, explaining why the triclinic symmetry enhances the formation actually of the pseudohexagonal crystals as crystal habit at the macroscopic scale. Lower thermodynamic and kinetic stability of HBA makes it easier to be activated and thus more instable at the microstructural scale: this is an indirect proof of the TBA presence in the usual surrounding conditions and in the same time raises the probability for HBA molecules to slide onto their crystalline layers due to the lability of hydrogen bonds keeping them and thus increased potential to intercalate with other molecules. The present results open the possibility for promising applications of HBA as a better lubricant for various industries, while in the medical sector superior cleanser, antifungal and antibacterial properties may be foreseen.

Magnesium borate (MB) is a technical ceramic exhibiting high heat resistance, corrosion resistance, great mechanical strength, great insulation properties, lightweightness, high strength, and a high coefficient of elasticity. Zinc borate (ZB) can be used as a multifunctional synergistic additive in addition to flame retardant additives in polymers. In this study, the raw materials of zinc oxide (ZnO), magnesium oxide (MgO), and boric acid (H 3 BO 3 ) were used in the mole ratio of 1 : 1 : 9, which was obtained from preexperiments. Using the starting materials, hydrothermal synthesis was applied, and characterisation of the products was performed using X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopies. The forms of Zn 3 B 6 O 12 ⋅3.5H 2 O, MgO(B 2 O 3 ) 3 ⋅7(H 2 O), and Mg 2 (B 6 O 7 (OH) 6 ) 2 ⋅9(H 2 O) were synthesised successfully. Moreover, the surface morphology was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the B 2 O 3 content was determined. In addition, the reaction yields were calculated. The results of the B 2 O 3 content analysis were in compliance with the literature values. Examination of the SEM images indicated that the obtained nanoscale minerals had a reaction efficiency ranging between 63-74% for MB and 87-98% for ZB. Finally, the fire-retarding properties of the synthesised pure MBs, pure ZBs, and mixtures of MB and ZB were determined using differential thermal analysis and thermal gravimetry (DTA-TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).

Magnesium borates can be used as detergent compounds or hydrocarbon catalyzers and in the ceramics industry for superconductor material manufacture owing to their high elastic coefficient and resistance to corrosion at high temperatures. In the present study, the synthesis of magnesium borate was facilitated via a novel ultrasonic method of mixing and the identification and characterization of the material were carried out via X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), and Raman spectroscopies, and the B 2 O 3 content was determined through titration. The surface morphology was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results of the XRD analysis identified the synthesized borate compounds as admontite [MgO(B 2 O 3)3 .7(H 2 O)], with powder diffraction file (pdf) no 01-076-0540, and mcallisterite [Mg 2 (B 6 O 7 (OH) 6)2 .9(H 2 O)], with pdf no 01-070-1902. The FT-IR and Raman spectra of the obtained samples were similar, with characteristic magnesium borate bands observed in both the infrared and visible regions. The results of the B 2 O 3 content analysis were in compliance with the literature. The investigation of the SEM images indicated that nanoscale minerals with a reaction efficiency ranging between 69% and 82% were obtained.
