Na-magadiite exchanged with cetyl-trimethylammonium cations provided organophilic silicate materials that allowed the effective removal of the acidic dye "eosin". The organic cations were intercalated into the interlayer spacing of the layered silicate via an exchange reaction between the organic cations from their bromide salt and the solid Na-magadiite at room temperature. Different techniques were used to characterize the effect of the initial concentration of the surfactant on the structure of the organo-magadiites. The C, H, N analysis indicated that a maximum of 2 organic cations of 1.03 mmol/g was achieved at initial concentrations higher than 0.25 mmol/g and was accompanied by an expansion of the basal spacing of 3.15 nm, with a tilted angle of 64.5° to the silicate layers. The conformation of the organic surfactants was probed using solid-state 13 C, finding mainly the trans conformation similar to that of the starting cetyl trimethylammonium bromide salt (C16TMABr).Thermal gravimetric analysis was carried out to study the thermal stability of the resulting organo-magadiites. The intercalated surfactants started to decompose at 200 °C, with a mass loss percentage of 8 % to 25 %, depending on the initial loading of the surfactant, and was accompanied by a decrease of the basal spacing from 3.20 nm to 2.51 nm, as deduced from the in situ X-ray diffraction studies. At temperatures below 220 °C, an expansion of the basal spacing from 3.15 to 3.35 nm occurred.These materials were used as a removal agent for the anionic dye "eosin". The maximum amount of the dye removed was related to the organic cation content and to the initial concentration of eosin, with an improvement from 2.5 mg/g to 98 mg/g. This value decreased when the organo-magadiite was preheated at temperatures above 200 °C. The regeneration tests indicated that an 85 % removal efficiency was maintained after 6 cycles of use for the organo-magadiites.

Organo-bentonites were prepared using a bentonite and an aqueous cetyltrimethylammonium hydroxide solution. The ratio of the surfactant (in mmoles) to the cation exchange capacity varied from 0.5 to 20, with 20 being the highest ratio ever reported in the literature. At high surfactant to cation exchange capacity ratios, the interlayer spacing increased to 3.75 nm due to the formation of a paraffin-type bilayer of surfactant cations, which was shown to be mainly in gauche conformations using solid state 13C CP/NMR. When the exchange reaction was carried out in a methanol-water mixture, the expansion of the organo-bentonites depended on the concentration of methanol (% by volume). The decomposition temperatures of the organic cations depended on the basal spacing of the organo-bentonites, and in situ X-ray diffraction revealed that the basal spacing of our organo-bentonites was stable up to 210°C. Above this temperature, the basal spacing shrunk to 1.47 nm due to decomposition of the surfactants.

RESUMO -A bentonita, composta predominantemente pelo argilomineral montmorilonita que lhe confere as propriedades físicas concentra a maior parte das reservas nacionais (62%) no Estado da Paraíba. A transformação da bentonita em argila organofílica consiste em ser realizada através de reação de troca dos cátions (Na + ou Ca 2+ ) presentes na superfície e no espaço interlamelar dos argilominerais, por cátions de sais quaternários de amônio. Neste trabalho a bentonita organofílica foi preparada utilizando dois tipos diferentes de sais quaternários de amônio, tais como: cloreto de alquil dimetil benzil amônio (Dodigen) e cloreto de cetil trimetil amônio (Genamin). As argilas organofilizadas foram caracterizadas por difração de raios X, inchamento de foster, capacidade de adsorção, e avaliado seu potencial na remoção de emulsões óleo/água. Os resultados confirmaram a incorporação dos sais quaternários de amônio na estrutura da argila e apresentaram elevados percentuais de remoção. INTRODUÇÃOA poluição da água por óleo tem deixado um impacto indesejado sobre o meio ambiente. A presença de óleo em água, não só induz efeitos prejudiciais para a vida aquática, mas também causa sérios problemas para estações de tratamento de águas residuais conforme Zhou et al. (2008) e Rajakovic et al. (2007. Geralmente, o petróleo provoca a contaminação da água por duas formas, óleo livre e óleo emulsionado. Óleo livre não é um grande problema, uma vez que o óleo pode ser separado por gravidade. No entanto, o óleo emulsionado apresenta um verdadeiro problema devido à sua estabilidade na fase aquosa.
