Characterization and Structural Performance in Bending of CLT Panels Made from Small-Diameter Logs of Loblolly/Slash Pine

Abstract: The main objective of this work was to study the structural viability of using small-diameter logs of Uruguayan Loblolly/Slash pine, mainly from thinning operations, to design cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels. A visual grade named “CTH” (coniferous thinning) was proposed, and 45 specimens of sawn timber boards were tested, resulting in 51% lower bending strength than that of the minimum strength class C14. Subsequently, 20 CLT panels were manufactured and experimentally tested, the results showed that the b… Show more

“…In [ 15 , 16 , 17 ], the authors also combined different species of wood with the same final conclusion of low-grade, high-grade timber distribution for inner and outer parts of the glulam timber, respectively. Furthermore, this conclusion has been recently extended to CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) panels [ 18 ]. In [ 16 ], when a high-grade wood such as Merpauh was used for the outer planks, improvements of the modulus of elasticity between 117% and 157% were achieved.…”

“…The mean values obtained for the panels in all treatments were exceeding the results reported in the literature. Baño et al (2018) studied CLT panels made of Pinus Loblolly wood and polyurethane adhesive. The dimensions of the panels were 0.381 x 0.102 m, similar to the panels of this study and the mean value obtained for density was 388 kg.m -³.…”

“…EWPs such as laminated veneer lumber (LVL), plywood, oriented strand board (OSB), and mass timber products such as glue-laminated timber (Glulam), cross laminated timber (CLT), and structural composite lumber (SCL) that are used in building construction have been around for decades, for instance. Since the application of mass timber products in the construction of tall buildings is of interest to the industry and the research community these days, several studies have evaluated different aspects of these products [ 13 , 14 , 15 ]. Additionally, limited work has been conducted on developing wood-based composite sandwich panels with three-dimensional cores for use in building envelopes.…”
