Characterization and recovery of tartaric acid from wastes of wine and grape juice industries

Abstract: Tartaric acid is mainly used in food, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics industries. In this study, the waste samples, which contain tartaric acid, from the wastes of wine and grape juice industries were characterized by using TG, DSC, FTIR and XRD techniques. HPLC was used to determine tartaric acid content of samples. The decomposition temperatures of waste samples were found to be relatively higher compared with that of pure tartaric acid. This difference in decomposition temperatures was attributed to the prese… Show more

“…Most of these by-products are rich in polyphenols, stilbenes, flavonoids, which are natural antioxidants [30] widely used as additives able to positively affect the chemico-physical properties of polymers in alternative of synthetic stabilizers usually employed in plastics [31,32]. Besides phenolic compounds, the dry grape pomace may also contain simple carbohydrates, complex polysaccharides (especially pectins, up to 30 wt.%), lipids (up to 10 wt.%), proteins (less than 3 wt.%), carboxylic acids salts, in particular tartrates and malates which can be found in amounts as much as 5-7 wt.% [33,34].…”

“…The films grown at T s region 205-305°C have similar spectra. The peaks in the wavenumber range of 1500-1775 cm À 1 represent the bonding of C ¼C or C¼O bonds [26,27]. The peaks in the range from 1000 cm À 1 to 1500 cm À 1 are characteristic of the C-O and C-C bending vibrations [27].…”
