Characterization and phylogenetic analysis of environmental stress-responsive SAP gene family encoding A20/AN1 zinc finger proteins in tomato

Abstract: Characterization of genes responsive to stress is important for efforts on improving stress tolerance of plants. To address components involved in stress tolerance of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), a stress-responsive gene family encoding A20/AN1 zinc finger proteins was characterized. In the present study, 13 members of this gene family were cloned from tomato cultivar Pusa Ruby and named as Stress Associated Protein (SAP) genes. Out of 13 genes, 12 have been mapped on their respective chromosomes. Expression… Show more

“…Among them, seven were identified as cold-responsive genes in microarray results. These include dehydrin [45], [46], SAP8 and SAP11 [47], alternative oxidase [48], LeVDE [49], ERF2 [50], and GME [51]. The expression patterns of these genes were similar among the three genotypes or higher in the two tolerant genotypes (Table S4).…”

“…Real-time PCR (QPCR) reactions were carried in the same way as described earlier (Solanke et al 2009). Primers were designed for the selected genes from 3 0 end of the gene using PRIMER EXPRESS version 2.0 (PE Applied Biosystems, USA) (Supplementary file S1).…”

“…In plants, genome-wide surveys have revealed several plant species with A20/AN1 ZFP genes inducible by abiotic stresses; examples are 18 rice genes, 14 Arabidopsis genes and 13 tomato genes encoding A20/AN1 ZFPs and 19 poplar genes and 11 maize genes encoding proteins containing at least one AN1 zinc finger (Jin et al, 2007;Solanke et al, 2009;Vij and Tyagi, 2006). Some of the A20/AN1 ZFP genes play an important role in stress tolerance.…”
