Characterization and photooxidative behaviour of nanocomposites formed with polystyrene and LDHs organo-modified by monomer surfactant

Abstract: Layered double hydroxide (LDH) organo-modified by a surface-active monomer, 3-sulfopropyl methacrylate (SPMA) was used as filler for polystyrene (PS). Different nanocomposites SPMA/LDH:PS were prepared by bulk polymerization process using low amount of initiator. The two components, filler and polymer, as well as the degree dispersion of the reactive filler as a function of its loading in PS were characterized by a combination of several techniques: X-ray diffraction, high resolution 13 C CP-MAS NMR, FTIR, UV-… Show more

“…These phenomena have been reported for several kinds of polymer used and were mainly attributed to a reduction of the photo-oxidation induction time [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17]. This, in turn, was attributed to several factors, such as the presence of iron ions catalyzing the photo-oxidation process [9,10], the formation of catalytic acidic sites or radicals following the decomposition of the organo-modifier (involving both the alkyl chain and the ammonium ions) [10][11][12]17].…”

“…Previous studies [15,16,[19][20][21] suggested that photo-degradation generates carbonyl and hydroxyl groups through chain scission and hydrogen abstraction from the polymer backbone. The degradation process is summarised in Fig.…”

“…Estes materiais apresentam como composição química [M , CO 3 , etc) e m representa o número de moléculas de água [5][6][7][8][9] . Os HDL's apresentam uma estrutura semelhante à da brucita (Mg(OH) 2 ), podem ser sintetizados por meio de rotas relativamente simples a um custo relativamente baixo, com controle de tamanho e uniformidade na distribuição de tamanho das partículas.…”
