Characterization and performance of the Suomi-NPP/VIIRS solar diffuser stability monitor

Abstract: We describe the on-orbit characterization and performance of the Solar Diffuser Stability Monitor (SDSM) on-board Suomi-NPP/VIIRS. This description includes the observing procedure of each SDSM event, the algorithms used to generate the Solar Diffuser degradation corrective factors, and the results for the mission to date. We will also compare the performance of the VIIRS SDSM and SD to the similar components operating on the MODIS instrument on the EOS Terra and Aqua satellites.

“…The SD may have non-negligible SD degradation at the wavelength of the shortest SWIR band, M8 (1238 nm), and the degradation is estimated to be around 0.5% [8,34,35]. The VIIRS SD on-orbit degradation, h(λ), is tracked by the on-board SDSM calibration, as mentioned previously [6][7][8]. VIIRS SDSM calibration was performed for every orbit in the first few months on orbit, and then the operational rate was reduced to once per day, and further reduced to once every two days after 16 May 2014.…”

“…So far, more than 1730 SDSM measurements have been performed for VIIRS. The SDSM has eight detectors with different center wavelengths tracking the SD degradation at the eight wavelengths [6][7][8]. Figure 5 shows the SD degradation derived from the SDSM measurements in symbols.…”
