Characterization and nucleotide sequence of the gene for the common α subunit of the bovine pituitary glycoprotein hormones

Abstract: The gene coding for the common alpha subunit of the bovine pituitary glycoprotein hormones was isolated from a bovine genomic library. The gene spans roughly 16.5 kbp, contains three intervening sequences, and codes for a message of approximately 730 nucleotides. The complete coding region of the gene was sequenced as well as 315 nucleotides of 5' flanking sequence and the entire intron C. Only a single base difference was found when the sequence of the gene was compared with that of the cDNA. Genomic blotting… Show more

“…All the PGH α genes previously reported in mammals and teleosts consist of four exons and three introns (Fiddes and Goodman, 1981;Goodwin et al ., 1983;Burnside et al ., 1988;Gordon et al ., 1988;Kato et al ., 1990;Golos et al ., 1991;Huang et al ., 1992;Suzuki et al ., 1995). The exonintron structure in the ibis PGH α gene was compared with that of carp (Huang et al, 1992), mouse , bovine (Goodwin et al, 1983) and human (Fiddes and Goodman, 1981) (Fig.…”

“…Within a particular species, the -subunits of all the gonadotropins are identical in amino acid sequence, as a single gene encodes the -subunit [22,23]. Target cell specificity arises from the -subunit [24,25], which is encoded by a distinct gene.…”
