Characterization and mapping of LanrBo: a locus conferring anthracnose resistance in narrow-leafed lupin (Lupinus angustifolius L.)

Abstract: A novel and highly effective source of anthracnose resistance in narrow-leafed lupin was identified. Resistance was shown to be governed by a single dominant locus. Molecular markers have been developed, which can be used for selecting resistant genotypes in lupin breeding. A screening for anthracnose resistance of a set of plant genetic resources of narrow-leafed lupin (Lupinus angustifolius L.) identified the breeding line Bo7212 as being highly resistant to anthracnose (Colletotrichum lupini). Segregation a… Show more

“…The line is still used as a reference in phytopathological assays as its Phomopsis stem blight resistance has never been broken despite wide implementation of this genotype in Australian breeding programs (Shankar et al 1996(Shankar et al , 2002Stefanova and Buirchell 2010;Yang et al 2015Yang et al , 2013aYang et al , 2002. In Europe, D. toxica seems to be a dormant pathogen as reports of the disease date from as early as 1880 in Germany and in 1892 in Denmark (on L. angustifolius and L. luteus) but it has never caused serious problems (Fischer 1893;Lind 1913). Although it has appeared from time to time in different countries in Europe, including Poland and Russia (Lewartowska et al 1994;Marcinkowska 2007).…”

“…Further characterization of the in vitro anti-fungal properties of β6-conglutin was performed in a detailed time course experiment against two isolates (WAC8672 and WAC10444) of a major fungal pathogen of lupins, C. lupini which causes anthracnose disease (Fischer et al, 2015). Radial outgrowth of C. lupini mycelium on PDA plates toward Whatman filter disks containing control protein (BSA), β6-conglutin or no protein was recorded.…”

“…In prior research, selection markers for resistance to anthracnose have been developed including the loci LanrBo (Ruge‐Wehling, Dieterich, Thiele, Eickmeyer, & Wehling, ; Fischer et al., ) and Lanr1 (Yang, Boersma, You, Buirchell, & Sweetingham, ; Kamphuis et al., ). These molecular tools are now available to introduce known resistance genes into novel prebreeding lines like those identified in the present work.…”
