In this study, eight different genotypes namely FA-006, FA-007, FA-008, FA-015, FA-016, FA-017, FA-022 and BARI Strawberry-1 were grown under field condition to evaluate the superior performance of tropical strawberry genotypes in terms of their morphological characters. Our results revealed that FA-015 genotype showed better performance in terms of plant height, leaf number, canopy spread, flowers plant-1, fruit set compared to other genotypes. The maximum days (62.29) required for flower initiation was found in the genotype FA-007 while the minimum days (30.59) required for flower initiation was recorded in the genotype FA-016. As regards to the fruit characters (length, width and weight), FA-022 genotype exhibited highest performances compared to other genotypes. Our results also implied that the highest fruit yield plant-1 (213.8g) was obtained from the genotype FA-022 and the highest amount of TSS (10.71%) was found in the genotype BARI Strawberry-1. Genotype FA-015 was superior in respect of growth related parameters and genotype FA-022 found potential in terms of fruit yield. Further research is needed on molecular characterization and marker aided selection of strawberry genotypes.

The present investigation was carried out in the Instructional cum Research Farm, Department of Horticulture, Biswanath College of Agriculture, AAU, Biswanath Chariali during 2015-16 to find the variety/varieties suitable for Assam condition. The experiment was laid out in a Factorial Randomized Block Design having three environmental conditions viz. Open condition (S 1), Poly house (S 2) and in Net house (S 3) with five varieties i. e. Cristal (V 1), Subarina (V 2), Sweet Charlie (V 3), Winter Dawn (V 4) and Eliyana (V 5) with three replications. The study revealed that the variety "Subarina" recorded maximum plant height (18.62 cm), plant spread (27.36 cm), produced maximum number of leaves (18.42), longest leaf (8.39 cm), longest petiole (9.12 cm) and maximum number of crowns (5.53). The maximum leaf breadth (13.57 cm) and maximum achene density (19.12/cm 2) was recorded in variety "Cristal". Significantly highest fruit length (4.08 cm), fruit diameter (3.09 cm), number of fruits per plant (18.04), weight of fruits (16.45 g), fruit production (297.33 g/plant) and yield (14.72 ton/ha) were recorded in Subarina. The variety "Subarina" performed well in all the environmental conditions as compared to the other varieties. The results of the experiment revealed that the performance in terms of vegetative growth and production of fruits were superior in Subarina as compared to other four varieties.

Pollen studies act as a prerequisite for choosing a compatible pollen parent and help plant breeders to achieve successful crossing between different cultivars. An experiment was conducted during 2018–19 at Fruit Research Farm of Regional Horticulture Research and Training Station Bajaura, Kullu, Himachal Pradesh to evaluate 8 commercial genetically distant pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) cultivars (Chawla, Nabha, P-26, Kandhari Kabuli, G-137, Jodhpur Red, Mridula and Bhagwa) for pollen morphology (shape and size) and viability. Hybridization studies were also carried out to assess the role of cross pollination in fruit set to infuse blood red aril colour and soft seededness in the selected cultivars. The compatibility behaviour was studied by using different cross combinations of cultivars followed by recording their fruit set percentage. It could help breeders understand the performance of cultivars as pollinizers which would ultimately help them in hybridization programs. Pollen viability of the pomegranate germplasm was determined using 2% acetocarmine. Highest pollen viability was recorded in Bhagwa (94.29%) followed by Chawla (91.21%). In hybridization studies, highest fruit set per cent among 16 crosses was observed in Mridula × P-26 (77.80%). The differences in fruit set percentage could be due to varied degree of compatibility between different genotypes, behaviour of pollen with respect to viability percentage, differences in growth rate of pollen tube and might also be due to differences in temperature during bloom period.
