Characterization and evaluation of magnesia-zirconia supports for normal-phase liquid chromatography

Abstract: SummaryA new packing based on a magnesia-zirconia composite was synthesized as rigid microparticles (4-6 pm) by a sol-gel process. The magnesia-zirconia composite exhibits a larger specific surface area, larger specific pore volume, better pore connectivity and more uniform pore size distribution than pure zirconia prepared under the same conditions. The chromatographic performance of magnesia-zirconia and zirconia packings in normalphase HPLC was evaluated using binary mobile phases (dichloromethane/cyclohexa… Show more

“…The data have been discussed in detail in another paper. 31 Preparation of alkylphosphonate 1-Dodecanol (100 mL) and sodium hydride (2.0 g) was stirred for 30 min at room temperature in an inert atmosphere of nitrogen gas. After 2.0 g of fosfomycin was added, the mixture was allowed to react at 120˚C for 48 h also in an inert atmosphere of nitrogen gas.…”

“…However, by introducing magnesia into zirconia, a more appropriate surface area, pore size distribution, and pore structure have been achieved in our laboratory [26]. These properties result in higher column efficiency in normal phase mode [27]. More importantly, the resultant mixed oxide, magnesia-zirconia (ZM), was found to have a greater affinity for phosphonates, and hence greater scope for development of its application in HPLC, than pure zirconia.…”
