Characterization and evaluation of hydrological processes responsible for spatiotemporal variation of surface water quality at Narmada estuarine region in Gujarat, India

Abstract: This study is an effort to trace the spatiotemporal variation in water at Narmada estuarine region through solute concentration. A total of 72 water samples were collected and analyzed from three sampling points along with in situ measurement of tidal height at monthly basis for 2 years. Result shows that spatiotemporal variation of water quality occurs because of the following main mechanisms, i.e., carbonate weathering, dilution and seawater-freshwater mixing. Firstly, points situated toward inland showing t… Show more

“…The flow of sediments is governed by many factors such as precipitation, water and soil conservation projects, construction of reservoirs, carbonate weathering, dilution, etc. ( Kumar et al, 2015 ; Liu et al, 2019 ). The upstream of Sabarmati experienced precipitation in early May 2020 ( TOI, 2020 ) and that can be the possible source of high SPM concentrations on May 5, 2020.…”

“…The amount of phosphorus in phosphate also varied significantly from the pre-monsoon to the post-monsoon, whereas p<0.05. High concentrations are visible during the monsoon as a result of increased salinity, regeneration, and phosphate release from the bottom into the aquatic pole due to turbulence and mixing processes (Kumar et al, 2015). In the Chattogram coastal area, the concentration of phosphate phosphorus varied between 0.221 µg/l and 0.844µg/l.…”

“…Nowadays, the literature on water quality from inland rivers and coastaline areas can be obtained easily, however there are very few reports on information of sea Voyage Rivers because of their complex ecosystem and diverse pollution resources. Literature on some of the spatio-temporal assessment of estuarine ecosystems includes Motru river estuary, Romania [16]; Estuarine systems from South Africa [7]; Estuary of Duliujian river, China [4]; Scheldt estuary, Belgium and Netherlands [3]; Zhangweinan river basin, china [10]; Ying river basin, china [12]; Tapi etsury, west coast of India [11]; Narmada estuary, Gujarat, India [18]; Bay of Bengal, India [19].…”
