Characterization and Evaluation of Heavy Metal Pollution in Soil-Wheat System Around Coal Mines in Pingdingshan, China

Abstract: Indoor experiments were conducted to fully understand soil metal contamination around coal mines in Pingdingshan, Henan province, China. Forty-three paired soil and wheat product samples were collected from three main mining areas in Pingdingshan. Soil Cd, Zn and Pb were assessed using the diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) and pentetic acid or diethylene triamine penlaacetic acid (DTPA). The pollution levels were evaluated. The Nemero comprehensive pollution index shows the soil heavy metal pollution is … Show more

“…The bio-transfer factors of Zn, Mo, Cu, Mg and Mn were considerably higher than those of other elements. This phenomenon was observed not only in this study but also in other studies (Abbas, et al 2017;Wang, et al 2017;Zhang, et al 2019). These elements are essential to the growth of wheat which has a higher capability to transfer trace elements from soils to the dietary components of the plant (Chen, et al 2016).…”

“…Certain heavy metals (Zn, Cu and Ni) are necessary for biological processes in the human organism and they represent integral and catalytic components of proteins and enzymes, but they can be toxic in an overdose (Tiwari and Lata, 2018). On the other hand, toxic or non-essential elements such as As, Cd, Cr and Pb have no biological function in the human body and can be harmful for human health even in extremely low concentrations in case of long-term exposure (Lei et al, 2015;Zhang et al, 2019). What is more, these metals are responsible for the depletion of certain essential elements (Abbas et al, 2017).…”

“…Prior to ignition, the reactor was first cleaned with a CO 2 + H 2 O mixture at 100 mL•min −1 for 2 h, then at 20 mL•min −1 for another hour to reach an adsorption−desorption equilibrium; the volume concentrations of CO 2 and the H 2 O gas phase were controlled at about 95.5 and 4.5%, respectively. 47 The reactor was then sealed and the pressure of CO 2 was maintained at 110 kPa. After that, the light source 300 W xenon lamp was turned on.…”
