“…Since we did not observe colocalization of CD31 staining with significant autoradiographic signals in any of our tissue sections, endothelial cells are unlikely to contribute to hepatic interstitial collagen synthesis in relevant quantity. Our data are therefore well in keeping with those studies on purified cultured endothelial cells, which indicated production of basement membrane components but not of interstitial collagens by these cells (Irving et al 1984). Although repeatedly suggested as the major source of liver collagens, hepatocytes did not display significant procollagen transcript levels in any of our samples in comparison with control hybridizations using sense RNA probes.…”

“…Furthermore, antibody reactivity decreased with passage number, which was similar to the findings of Maciag et al [180] and Hormonia [201]. The finding that liver-derived HSE cells were negative for factor VIII; vWF antigen was consistent with our inability to stain mouse liver sinusoids with this antibody and with previous reports on the distribution of this antigen in vivo [90]. Liver sinusoidal endothelial cells selectively Table 3.…”

“…Another antigen commonly used to identify the endothelial nature of cells, factor VIII-related antigen (FVIII-RAg), is present in most organ endothelia except liver sinusoids [90], renal gtomerular capillaries [91], or in lymphatic endothelium [92]. In addition, there appears to be species-specificity, since many of the commercially available antibodies against human FVIlI-RAg do not stain mouse or rat endothelia in tissue section (Belloni, unpublished observation).…”
