Characterization and correction of cupping effect artefacts in cone beam CT

Abstract: Objective: The purpose of this study was to demonstrate and correct the cupping effect artefact that occurs owing to the presence of beam hardening and scatter radiation during image acquisition in cone beam CT (CBCT). Methods: A uniform aluminium cylinder (6061) was used to demonstrate the cupping effect artefact on the Planmeca Promax 3D CBCT unit (Planmeca OY, Helsinki, Finland). The cupping effect was studied using a line profile plot of the grey level values using ImageJ software (National Institutes of H… Show more

“…; Esmaeili et al. ; Hunter & McDavid ); such artifacts may encumber the assessment of bone level adjacent to an implant and probably be more dominant in case of a thin bone wall. In fact, the limited evidence available in the literature presents contradictory results regarding the accuracy of peri‐implant bone level estimation on CBCT‐generated images.…”

“…We also evaluated the intensity profiles of the CM area for assessment of the cupping effect [12]. Strong streak artifacts that had large changes in the pixel values were observed at higher CM concentrations.…”

“…Computer hardware modifications with built‐in copper pre‐filtration were used to suppress but not completely eliminate cupping artifacts caused by beam hardening. Additional corrections with a subtraction algorithm address scatter contamination and eliminated cupping on CBCT images .…”
