Characterization and antimicrobial activity of vaginal lactobacillus isolate

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the probiotic potential of bacteriocin-producing lactobacilli strain Lactobacillus plantarum G2 isolated from the vaginal mucus of healthy women. The antimicrobial effect of G2 was confirmed in the mixed culture with pathogenic Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella abony and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, while bacteriocine activity was detected against S. aureus and S. abony only. The strain showed an excellent survival rate in low pH and in the presence o… Show more

“…Because annexin V binds strongly to phosphatidylserine, it can be used to identify cells in all stages of programmed cell death . PI exclusively stains cells with interrupted cell membranes; therefore, it can be utilized to identify late apoptotic and dead cells . Cells cultured in a supernatant‐free medium served as controls.…”

“…The protective effects of normal vaginal flora, particularly lactobacilli, are increasingly being accepted . Lactobacilli adjust the vaginal microbiota through various mechanisms, including auto‐aggregation, co‐aggregation with pathogenic microorganisms, adhesion to epithelial cells, and production of various antimicrobial substances, such as lactic acid, bacteriocins, hydrogen peroxide and biosurfactants . Daily consumption of systematically selected probiotics provides a natural, safe and effective means of stabilizing the fluctuating vaginal flora and thereby decrease the risk of infections in healthy women and women prone to urogenital disease .…”
