In the present study volatile oil profile of the four popular varities of large cardamom (Amomum subulatum Roxb.) namely Sawney, Varlangey, Ramla and Ramsey were studied in detail. The capsules contained 58.1-68.1% seeds and 1.2-2.8% essential oil. By GC-MS analysis 23 constituents of the oil were identified with 1, 8-cineole as the chief component. Major constituents of the oil were α-pinene (1.7-6.5%), β -pinene (4.0-11.1%), 1, 8-cineole (63.2-73.4%) and α-terpineol (5.6-7.6%). The oil contained high level of 1, 8-cineole when compared to small cardamom (Elettaria cardamom Maton). α -Terpinyl acetate, the chief component of small cardamom oil was not detected in large cardamom.

Intervention against pathogenic bacteria using natural plant material has a long history. Plant materials also have been widely used as fillers and/or reinforcers in polymer composites. Some natural fibre plants, such as hemp, are regarded to possess antibacterial activity against a wide range of pathogenic bacteria. Innovative applications can be explored if they are incorporated in polymer composites. This review aims to compile the relevant investigations on antibacterial activity of hemp and other fibre plants such as jute, flax, kenaf, sisal, and bamboo. The antibacterial character might be contributed from cannabinoids, alkaloids, other bioactive compounds, or phenolic compounds of lignin. This review is intended to encourage utilization of hemp and other natural fibre plants in value-added diversified products. Some potential applications are also discussed.

Abstract-Natural fibers are used to improve mechanical properties of composites materials; research into the influence of the mechanical properties of various fibers' cell walls on the mechanical properties of composites is very important for producing highquality composites. The aim of this research is to study the influence of the mechanical properties of tobacco stalk fiber cell wall on the mechanical properties of particle-based panels, comparing the properties of particleboards made with tobacco stalks from different parts of the stem (bottom, midpoint, and top) and treated tobacco stalks from the midpoint of the stem with 1% NaOH solution at 100℃ for 0, 30, 60, and 90 mins, respectively. The results show that the mechanical properties of tobacco stalk fiber cell walls from different parts of the stalk differ and are reduced after the tobacco stalk is treated with 1% NaOH solution. The mechanical properties of the tobacco stalk-based particleboard panels were negatively correlated with the mechanical properties of the tobacco stalk fiber cell wall. After the 1% NaOH treatments of 0-60 min, the middle lamellae were broken, and the mechanical properties of the particleboard were improved; after the 1% NaOH treatment of 90 min, the fiber cell walls were broken and the MOR and MOE of the panels were reduced. Thus, it was concluded that the mechanical properties of fiber cell wall can be reduced to improve the mechanical properties of particleboard panels. The improvement of the mechanical properties of particleboard with no-added-Formaldehyde resin by reducing the mechanical properties of fiber cell wall will be studied in future.
