Characterization and Analysis of the Mortars in the Church of the Company of Jesus—Quito (Ecuador)

Abstract: The Church of the Company of Jesus in Quito (1605–1765) is one of the most remarkable examples of colonial religious architecture on the World Heritage List. This church has multiple constructive phases and several interventions with no clear record of the entire architectural site, including the historical mortars. A total of 14 samples of coating mortars inside the central nave were taken, with the protocols suggested by the research team and a comparative sample of the architectural group that does not have… Show more

“…The aphanitic or fine-grained texture is evident in the microscopic analysis of the samples where the vitreous crystals expose fragments of andesite and dacite manufacture. Materials are of widespread use in the civil and religious constructions of the Historic Center of Quito, which are evidenced in the studies of the Church of the Company of Jesus and the Church of San Francisco [16,17]. In addition to the presence of anorthite in the triclinic section, a variety of plagioclase from the feldspar group and muscovite from the silicate group, phyllosilicate subgroup, were used as secondary minerals.…”
