The abilities of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and focused ion beam (FIB) milling for obtaining high-resolution images from top surfaces, cross-sectional surfaces, and even in three dimensions, are becoming increasingly important for imaging and analyzing tooth structures such as enamel and dentin. FIB was originally developed for material research in the semiconductor industry. However, use of SEM/FIB has been growing recently in dental research due to the versatility of dual platform instruments that can be used as a milling device to obtain low-artifact cross-sections of samples combined with high-resolution images. The advent of the SEM/FIB system and accessories may offer access to previously inaccessible length scales for characterizing tooth structures for dental research, opening exciting opportunities to address many central questions in dental research. New discoveries and fundamental breakthroughs in understanding are likely to follow. This review covers the applications, key findings, and future direction of SEM/FIB in dental research in morphology imaging, specimen preparation for transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis, and three-dimensional volume imaging using SEM/FIB tomography.

The study of the ancient ceramic is of great significance to the identification of authenticity, value recognition, cultural types, and dissemination channels of the ceramic. In this study, a series of technical problems such as ceramic contour extraction, image distortion correction, and nonlinear contour modeling for 3D printing of rotating body under complex background were solved and a restoration algorithm for the shape of ancient ceramics was proposed. Then, an accurate contour model is established by using the two-dimensional images of the rotating ancient ceramics to reconstruct the three-dimensional model of the ceramic shape. The experimental results show that the modeling algorithm for three-dimensional printed ceramics can accurately obtain the three-dimensional model of rotating ancient ceramics, which is of certain significance to explore a new direction of the research and development of three-dimensional printed ancient ceramics.

AbstractIn the past decade, biomimetic calcium phosphate (CaP) ceramics have been considered as practicable grafts and biomaterial substitutes in repairing jaw bone defect after tumor resection or traffic accident. Nowadays, increasing incidence of biomedical material-associated infection has raised a concern when applying these materials. In this work, a new porous CaP scaffold with antibacterial coating was proposed. This biomimetic scaffold was composited with berberine (BBR), Ag nanoparticles (nAg), and silk fibroin (SF). The microstructures and phase composition of the scaffolds were analyzed. The cytocompatibility and osteogenic potential of the prepared samples were evaluated in vitro. The scaffolds held hierarchical structure: the first-level porous CaP ceramic with micron pores ranged from 250 to 600 µm; the second-level spongy-like structure with abundant capillary pores ranged from 500 nm to 10 µm; and the third-level structure was achieved by filling BBR, nAg, and SF gel coatings into the above porous structures. The experimental results showed that the antimicrobial capability of single BBR coating is inconspicuous. However, the introduction of nAg could significantly promote the antibacterial effect of scaffolds. At the same time, such scaffolds showed improved osteoinductivity. This new biomimetic CaP scaffold with antibacterial and osteoinductive properties may be a promising candidate for bone tissue engineering.
