Characteristics of Ultradrawn Polyethylene Films as a Function of Temperature Estimated by the Positron Annihilation Lifetime Method

Abstract: Three kinds of mechanical relaxations, the α, β, and λ transitions, of ultradrawn polyethylene films were obtained by dynamic mechanical measurements, and the results were analyzed by positron annihilation. The gels were prepared by crystallization from dilute solutions and were then dried. The dried gel films were stretched by up to a draw ratio of 300 times (λ = 300). The temperature dependence of the intensity (I 3) of the long-lived component of the orthopositronium (o-Ps) as well as that of the lifetime (… Show more

“…Figure shows the variation of the o ‐Ps lifetime (τ 3 ) with the degree of deformation. The observed τ 3 values are in good agreement with those found in the literature , . Since the τ 3 value gives an indication of the free volume hole size, it can be concluded that parallel deformation slightly increases the size of free volume holes, while during perpendicular deformation the size remains essentially constant.…”

“…The position of the relaxation peak associated with the crystal dispersion [26][27][28][29] of UHMWPE (around 50-100 C), slightly shifted to a lower temperature with increasing MWNT content, indicating the disorder of the UHMWPE crystallites.…”

“…The histogram in Figure 11a shows that the free volume estimated by the long-lived life-time (t 3 ) in a UHMWPE medium increased with temperature; the estimation method and the maximum entropy for lifetime analysis of the results have been described elsewhere. 43 The horizontal scale corresponds to the radius of free volume from Tao's equation. 44 The sharpness of the intensity distribution was indicative of a narrow distribution of holes of a relatively uniform size.…”
