Characteristics of Thoracic Malignancies That Occur After Solid-Organ Transplantation

Abstract: Solid-organ transplantation is associated with a high risk of lung cancer and may have an important synergetic part with other risk factors for lung cancer (tobacco). However, survival rates from lung cancer in our study population are similar to those of nontransplanted patients. In addition, surgery can result in favorable survival results.

“…One patient is using trastuzumab after chemotherapy and the other patients are on hormone therapy. Lung cancer development risk was found to be 0.78% in transplantation patients and occurrence time was found to be a median of 6.6 years by Génébès et al [17]. In our two patients with lung cancer, cancer occurrence times were at 2 and 10 years post-transplantation.…”

“…For kidney and heart transplant recipients, the prevalence of bronchogenic carcinoma has been found to range from 0.5% (kidney) to 2.8% (heart). [2][3][4] Now that lung transplantations throughout the world have been performed successfully for more than two decades, it has become possible to estimate the prevalence of lung cancer in lung transplant recipients.…”
