Characteristics of the Surface Plasmon–Polariton Resonance in a Metal Grating, as a Sensitive Element of Refractive Index Change

Abstract: The resonant excitation of surface plasmon–polariton waves in metal gratings with rectangular and sinusoidal relief was studied. The main characteristics of the resonant excitation of a surface plasmon–polariton wave were obtained using analytical methods due to the fact that the resonance is excited at a grating thickness much smaller than a wavelength (1.064 µm). It is shown that the obtained results are very close to those calculated using numerical methods, e.g., Rigorous Coupled Wave Approach (RCWA). Ther… Show more

“…There is also a match for the third column for Figure 1b,c. However, the equations of the fifth row become the equations of the fourth row if it is taken into account that S (β) n = 2π/λ [46] for the grating shown in Figure 1b. On the other hand, Symmetry 2020, 12, 1315 9 of 14 the conditional period Λ con can be introduced for the equations, which relates to the prism structure.…”

“…The resonance appears at the different wavelengths or at the different angles when the refractive index of the tested medium changes. Grating-based sensors can be of two types, namely, the dielectric grating on the dielectric substrate or metal or dielectric grating on the metal substrate [ 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 ]. The description and analyses of various refractive index sensors as well as providing extensive references on the corresponding sensors are presented in the reviews references [ 9 , 11 ].…”

“…Methods of field enhancement due to resonance phenomena in periodic nanostructures are well known. In particular, waveguide modes are resonant by dielectric gratings [7], resonance of surface plasmon-polariton waves by metal gratings [8], and resonance of surface plasmons [9]. The reflection coefficient can be equal to unity under waveguide resonance by dielectric gratings.…”
