Characteristics of the Spatial Pattern of the Dengue Vector, Aedes Aegypti, in Iquitos, Peru

Abstract: We determine the spatial pattern of Aedes aegypti and the containers in which they develop in two neighborhoods of the Amazonian city of Iquitos, Peru. Four variables were examined: adult Ae. aegypti, pupae, containers positive for larvae or pupae, and all water-holding containers. Adults clustered strongly within houses and weakly to a distance of 30 meters beyond the household; clustering was not detected beyond 10 meters for positive containers or pupae. Over short periods of time restricted flight range an… Show more

“…Effective vector control relies critically on the determination of the proper scale to address dengue virus transmission (Getis et al, 2003;Suaya et al, 2009). Different geographical scales have been suggested, ranging from finer scales based on the vector's flight range (Getis et al, 2003;Yoon et al, 2012) to larger scales due to the relative importance the closeness of neighbouring communities and human movement (Shepard et al, 2012).…”

“…In some studies, released mosquitoes tended to cluster around houses with some dispersal towards adjacent houses, and mosquitoes released on the perimeter of villages moved towards the centre of the village (Sheppard et al, 1969;Trpis and Hausemann, 1986;Getis et al, 2003;Harrington et al, 2005;Maciel-de-Freitas et al, 2006). The relatively large numbers and duration of DENV infected females captured in houses with confirmed dengue cases in Merida, Mexico may further indicate high fidelity between Ae.…”

“…aegypti is that they rarely disperse far from where they eclose (i.e. emergence as an adult from the pupa) (Getis et al, 2003), therefore, the presence of adult forms is for practical purposes an accurate indication of the proximity of breeding sites. Adults only disperse further when a vital requirement is limiting or absent or there is a disturbance.…”
