Characteristics of the Quality of Korean High-Rise Apartments Using the Health Performance Indicator

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to apply health performance indicators to actual apartments in order to evaluate the health performance of high-rise and highdensity Korean apartments and their environment. “…In summary, the preferential parameters of a healthy home in previous research are divided into three categories: comfort, structure and equipment, and space. Comfort parameters in lighting [ 43 , [45] , [46] , [47] ], view [ [42] , [43] , [44] , [45] , [46] , [47] ], noise [ 42 , 43 , [46] , [47] , [48] ], and air quality [ 43 , 46 , 47 ] items have been considered. Technical conditions [ 45 ], heating and ventilation systems [ 43 , [45] , [46] , [47] ], insulation [ 43 , 45 ], and material [ 45 ] are parameters of structure and equipment.…”

“…The cause of the ambiguities in the previous studies can be found in the occupants’ perception process [ 52 ]. That is, insufficient activation of the occupants’ perception processing [ 46 , 47 , 49 ] resulted in unclear examinations of the SDA through the self-evaluation process [ 23 , 24 , 53 , 54 , 55 , 56 , 57 , 58 ]. For example, misinformation effects prevented the occupants’ perception from focusing on precise comparisons with their actual experience in order to satisfy their amenity and efficiency needs [ 59 , 60 , 61 , 62 , 63 ].…”

“…Ambiguities in previous studies relate to occupants' perception processes [15]. That is, insufficient activation of perception processing occurred due to obscure examinations of SDA during the entire self-evaluation procedure [3,16,17]. Furthermore, the evaluation process was insufficiently directed to explain the relationships between spatial elements [18].…”

“…However, SDA has not been reviewed for amenity and efficiency because occupants have not clearly reported whether their spaces are able to satisfy their lifestyles considering their subjective residency values such as social, cultural, and personal background, and experiences. Consequently, the deficiency of amenity and efficiency in a real space and economic loss after the completion of building construction hardly decreased [3].…”
