Hydrate phase transition may bring hidden dangers for well control safety, even accidents of blowout happen in deep water drilling. Accurate calculation of all the drilling parameters is of great importance for well control safety. In this study, the mathematic models of transient heat transfer and multiphase flow have been established with the consideration of hydrate phase transition. Furthermore, the position where hydrate formation is most likely to occur was predicted with the proposed models, and the factors affecting hydrate formation region were also analyzed. Finally, the analysis of the effect of gas hydrate phase transition on some important parameters in well control, such as the pit gain, gas void fraction, and bottom hole pressure, is presented. The results show that hydrates form near the mud line during the drilling and shut‐in stage, but the hydrate formation region will be narrowed as well killing start. Additionally, the hydrate formation region decreased with the increase of flow rate and increased with the increasing shut‐in time, hydrate inhibitors, and riser insulation are presented to prevent hydrate blockage. More importantly, the gas void fraction and pit gain decrease due to the formation of hydrates, leading to the gas kick early detection not timely and gas kick more “hidden.”

A Dynamic Remote Sensing Data-Driven Approach for Oil Spill Simulation in the Sea

In view of the fact that oil spill remote sensing could only generate the oil slick information at a specific time and that traditional oil spill simulation models were not designed to deal with dynamic conditions, a dynamic data-driven application system (DDDAS) was introduced. The DDDAS entails both the ability to incorporate additional data into an executing application and, in reverse, the ability of applications to dynamically steer the measurement process. Based on the DDDAS, combing a remote sensor system that detects oil spills with a numerical simulation, an integrated data processing, analysis, forecasting and emergency response system was established. Once an oil spill accident occurs, the DDDAS-based oil spill model receives information about the oil slick extracted from the dynamic remote sensor data in the simulation. Through comparison, information fusion and feedback updates, continuous and more precise oil spill simulation results can be obtained. Then, the simulation results can provide help for disaster control and clean-up. The Penglai, Xingang and Suizhong oil spill results showed our simulation model could increase the prediction accuracy and reduce the error caused by empirical parameters in existing simulation systems. Therefore, the DDDAS-based detection and simulation system can effectively improve oil spill simulation and diffusion forecasting, as well as provide decision-making information and technical support for emergency responses to oil spills.Remote Sens. 2015, 7 7106

In this paper, we compared the normalized radar cross section in the cases of oil spill, biogenic slicks, and clean sea areas with image samples made from 11-pixel NRCS average, and determined their thresholds of the NRCS of the synthetic aperture radar. The results show that the thresholds of oil and biogenic slicks exhibit good consistency with the corresponding synthetic aperture radar images. In addition, we used the normalized radar cross section of clean water from adjacent patches of oil or biogenic slicks areas to replace that of oil or biogenic slicks areas, and retrieve wind fi eld by CMOD5.n and compare wind velocity mending of oil and biogenic slicks areas with Weather Research and Forecasting modeled data, from which the root mean squares of wind speed (wind direction) inversion are 0.89 m/s (20.26°) and 0.88 m/s (7.07°), respectively. Therefore, after the occurrence of oil spill or biogenic slicks, the real wind fi eld could be repaired using the method we introduced in this paper. We believe that this method could improve the accuracy in assessment of a real wind fi eld on medium and small scales at sea, and enhance effectively the monitoring works on similar oil or biogenic slicks incidents at sea surface.
