Characteristics of Suicide from 1998–2001 in a Metropolitan Area

Abstract: In order to establish effective suicide preventive programs, it is important to know the etiologic factors and causal relationships between suicide and behavior. Coroner data was analyzed for the 468 suicides that occurred in Indianapolis, Indiana during 1998-2001. The age-adjusted suicide rate was 14.08 per 100,000. Almost one-half of the victims had a mental illness and 26% had a history of alcohol/substance abuse. “…Substance use can also compromise the effectiveness of pharmacotherapy interventions by causing serious side effects, potentiating effects of some psychotropic medications (thereby increasing risk of overdose), and decreasing adherence to medication regimens (Catz, Heckman, Kochman, & DiMarco, 2001; National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2005). Finally, alcohol and substance use are associated with increases in suicidal ideation and suicide attempts, shifting intervention efforts to crisis management rather than other therapeutic goals (e.g., Claassen et al, 2007; Goldstein & Levitt, 2006; Shen et al, 2006).…”

“…Firearms were used in 73% of suicides committed by adults over the age of 65 (75). Older adults who are suicidal are also more likely to be divorced or widowed, living alone, and experience stressful life events (financial problems, interpersonal problems) and have a greater prevalence of depression, substance abuse (78,79) and physical illness (74,77,(80)(81)(82). In a review of suicide risk among psychiatric inpatients in Denmark, Erlangsen and colleagues (83) noted that affective disorders had almost a twofold higher risk of suicide among psychiatric inpatients than other types of disorders, while patients with dementia had a significantly lower risk ratio of 0.2.…”
