Indoor Air Pollution (IAP) from smoky cooking fires causes deaths over 22,800 per year being the fourth leading cause of death in Nepal. The study aims to compare the pollution level particularly Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Particulate Matter (PM 2.5 ) in different firewood species. Two households one with ICS and TCS is selected purposively to monitor the concentration of pollutants in Ward no. 3 of Gatlang, Rasuwa, Nepal. IAP Meter based on Laser Sensor principle is used to monitor real time concentration of PM 2.5 and CO. 24 hours mean concentration of PM 2.5 and 8 hours mean average concentrations of CO are found to be above the WHO and National Indoor Air Quality Guidelines i.e. For ICS using household the concentration is found to be 155.26 µg/m 3 and 9 ppm respectively and household using TCS is found to be 385.12 µg/m 3 and 12.2 ppm). Both pollutants’ concentration is found less in Abies Spectabilis than other species. Positive correlation is found in both households along with moisture content, amount of firewood used, etc. This result suggests the use of Abies Spectabilis as it emits less emission as compared to other species as it has less moisture content that reduces the concentration of air pollution. Land degradation is a serious hindrance to agricultural development in Uzbekistan, a country striving to rebuild its agricultural sector for self-sustained production. The potential of multipurpose trees for upgrading degraded land is enormous. However, knowledge is lacking about the establishment and growth characteristics of different species, the energy content of firewood and the nutritive value of fodder. This study presents such data for 10 selected local multipurpose species grown on gleyic solonchak soil. Elaeagnus angustifolia L. and Tamarix androssowii showed superior biomass growth, respectively producing up to 11.0 and 10.4 t ha À1 of utilizable aboveground dry matter (DM). E. angustifolia showed high potential for rapid establishment evidenced by root elongation of over 100 m tree À1 at the age of 3 years. T. androssowii, Prunus armeniaca L. and Populus nigra var. pyramidalis Spach exhibited the greatest fuelwood characteristics, showing calorific values in the range of 14.4 -16.2 MJ DM kg À1 . E. angustifolia and Morus alba L. demonstrated superior fodder potential given by the crude protein content of 216 and 117 g DM kg À1 . Recommendations on species selection are proposed based on various species characteristics. In assessing the potential of trees for afforestation of degraded land a reliable economic analysis of these aspects must be taken into account. When considering all characteristics concurrently, a mixture of species instead of monocrop cultivation seems to provide the best solution for improving degraded land.

The biomass energy has the potentiality of sequestering carbon and the capacity of reducing global warming. The study was conducted with a view to assessing the local preferences of firewood for domestic use with the physical characteristics of firewood species. The study was conducted in different communities of Kamrabo village under Shibpur Upazila in Narsingdi district of Bangladesh. Purposive random sampling was performed for the study covering 50% households with a total of 160 households of the study area. A direct interview with semi-structured questionnaires based on twelve quality criteria was conducted in the study area for identification of local preferences of firewood species and drawing up a pair-wise ranking matrix based on it. Fuel value index (FVI) was used to rank the preferred firewood species based on their physical properties. The trees Artocarpus heterophyllus, Swietenia mahagoni, Albizia lebbek, Acacia auriculiformis, Syzygium fruticosum, etc. having the FVI values were found in decreasing order. The study found a resemblance between the order of FVI values and the ranks of the firewood species by household preferences. The study will be useful in energy management and policy in rural Bangladesh.
