Rehabilitation and repair of flexible pavements produce huge amounts of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) material. Using RAP in the formulation of portland cement concrete (PCC) is a technique that is part of a sustainable development approach since it reduces on the consumption of new aggregates and reuses a material that is considered as waste. This paper describes the semi-adiabatic calorimetry test performed on a concrete mix incorporating RAP material as aggregate. Results showed that the cement hydration process is not affected by the presence of asphalt coated on the surface of RAP material. Classical tests (compressive strength, flexural and indirect-tensile strengths, elastic modulus, and free-shrinkage) were also performed on PCC mixes incorporating different percentages of RAP. It was found that as the percentage of RAP increases, the PCC mechanical properties decrease. This is mainly attributed to the presence of voids in the transition zone between the asphalt-coated aggregates and the hydrated cement paste as confirmed by scanning-electron microscope images. Unrestrained shrinkage testing showed statistically insignificant change in shrinkage strain with RAP content. The strength and shrinkage results lead to conclude that as much as 40% of RAP could be incorporated into the formulation of PCC and achieve properties that are acceptable for the construction of rigid pavements.

Development of Mix Designs for Minimally Refined Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) Concrete for Florida Concrete Test Road

Abstract:The main objective was to develop mix designs for concrete incorporating minimally processed reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) materials to be used in the Florida Concrete Test Road. The laboratory program was conducted in two phases. Phase I involved testing of twelve (12) trial mixes to identify feasible mixes which could meet the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) specification requirements for pavement concrete. Based on the preliminary test results from the trial mixes, ten (10) production mixes were identified and evaluated more extensively in Phase II to establish the optimum concrete mixes incorporating RAP to be recommended. Concrete mixtures, with 0% to 40% RAP as aggregate replacement and using 20% fly ash and 50% slag as cement replacement, were designed using the optimized aggregate gradation (OAG) technique instead of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) method. Among the RAP concrete evaluated, the 20% RAP concrete mixes with 0%, 20% fly ash, and 50% slag as cement replacement were able to meet Florida Department of Transportation's (FDOT) over-design compressive strength of 29 MPa (4200 psi) at 28 days. Using 20% and 40% RAP in concrete could result in saving in the total cost of aggregate by 9% and 17%, respectively. When the RAP is not refined (e.g., no washing of RAP, and no separating of coarse and fine portions), it is recommended that 20% of RAP can be used as aggregate replacement in pavement concrete.

Tear-off roofing shingle, referred to as Reclaimed asphalt shingle (RAS), is the byproduct of construction demolition and it is a major solid waste stream in the U.S. Reuse of this byproduct in road construction sector can contribute to the success of materials sustainability as well as landfill conservation. Ground RAS has similar particle distribution as sand and its major component includes aggregate granules, fibers, and asphalt. To promote the beneficial utilization of RAS, this study evaluates the effect of RAS in cement mortar when used as replacement of sand. In addition, the study investigates how cellulose fibers from RAS behave under high alkaline environment during cement hydration process, which may significantly affect mortar's strength performance. The laboratory study includes measurements of physical, mechanical, and durability behaviors of cement mortar containing RAS replacing sand up to 30%. It was found that the optimum mixture proportions are 5% and 10% for compressive strength and toughness, respectively.
