Characteristics of rodent outbreaks in the Low San Francisco Sergipano (Sergipe, Brazil) and influence of anomalies on sea surface temperature on temperatures in this region

Abstract: Construction of the Sobradinho Dam has had a strong environmental impact on the Lower São Francisco Sergipano ("LSFS") NorthEast Brazil ("NEB") region. No detailed studies of the floodplain areas were conducted prior to these changes, and there are thus no records of the floristic and faunal diversity extant in this ecosystem before the dam was built. One of the worst consequences in this region has been the onset of rodent outbreaks in rice crops. The climate in NEB is highly variable, and forecasts predict h… Show more

“…This concurs with our results, where they were shown to cause damage to the highest number of crop genera (45), affecting corn the most ( Felix et al, 2014 ; Ferraz et al, 2003 ). Early studies on crop damage and pest control in Latin America focused on rodents ( Espinoza & Rowe, 1979 ), and they have continued to be the main focus of research during the period included in our review ( Felix et al, 2014 ; Ferraz et al, 2003 ; Sánchez-Cordero & Martínez-Meyer, 2000 ; Santos, 2018 ). Rodents can cause extensive damage to crops and have often been the target of lethal control ( Hilje, 1992 ; Villafaña Martín et al, 1999 ).…”
