“…Follicular unit strip surgery involves the separation of individual follicular units from a linear strip of the donor scalp, leaving behind a linear scar at the donor site (Bernstein and Rassman 1997). In follicular unit extraction, multiple, small (1 mm) punches are used to isolate follicular units (Shin et al 2015). While the latter has many advantages including the absence of a wide, linear scar, it is far more time consuming than follicular unit strip surgery.…”

“…While the latter has many advantages including the absence of a wide, linear scar, it is far more time consuming than follicular unit strip surgery. Subsequently, a robotic method of follicular unit extraction was developed and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2011 (Shin et al 2015). The robot is computer-assisted and physician-controlled, allowing for a safe and effective extraction of distinct follicular units from the donor site.…”

“…In the present studies, the average number of grafts per session is less than 1000 and transection rates between 5 and 8 %. The cost is also high for now [20][21][22]. Based on our experience, on average, a patient is able to tolerate a 6-7 h hair transplant session.…”

“…In recent years, an increase in the number of experienced surgeons who perform this method and the use of automated equipment, such as micromotor systems, powered punching devices, the Neograft device, computer-assisted robotic systems, has decreased the operation duration and increased the number of grafts that can be collected. As a result, the FUE method is becoming more and more popular and a more frequently utilized method [19][20][21][22].…”

“…For future automatic FU transplantation by using the FUE method, furthermore, the exact number of hairs and the hair density of the recipient area should be known for precise hair transplantation [21]- [23]. For these reasons, this paper presents a novel FU classification method using boundary vector variations for improving the contour-based FU classification of the ARTAS system.…”
