“…This observation was rarely reported in previous studies. As a propionic acid-producing bacterium, Propionibacterium was once isolated from carious dentin and could decompose collagen and cause dentin caries ( Hoshino et al, 1984 ). Another team has recently detected Propionibacterium in the microbial community from the apical area of persistent apical periodontitis ( Zhou & Wang, 2014 ).…”

“…Bacterial strains were maintained on Brain Heart Infusion (BHI: Becton Dickinson, Cockeysville, MD, USA)-blood (sheep) agar plates (7,8). P. acnes was cultured in 100 ml of BHI broth (9,10) under aerobic conditions at 378C, and harvested at the logarithmic growth phase (optical density (OD) at 660 nm 0/2.0 Á/2.5) as live organisms. P. anaerobius cells were cultured anaerobically in Trypticase Soy Broth (TSB: Becton Dickinson) (11) in an anaerobic glovebox (AZ-Hard, Hirasawa Works, Tokyo, Japan) containing a nitrogen atmosphere with 10% H 2 and 10% CO 2 , and harvested at the logarithmic growth phase (OD at 660 nm 0/1.0) as live organisms.…”
