Paddy is the most important grain crop in China. In addition, water is one of the most important components for sustainable paddy production, and the quantity of irrigation for paddy fi elds accounts for approximately 70% of its total agricultural water resource consumption [1]. However, water supply is limited because of serious regional and seasonal water shortages, and paddy production is impaired by increasing water shortage [2]. Meanwhile, China is the largest producer and consumer of synthetic fertilizers in the world. Fertilizer and pesticide overuse in order to achieve high paddy yields might result not only in poor grain yield but also low N use Pol. J. Environ. Stud. Vol. 27, No. 1 (2018), 345-355 AbstractAlternate drought and fl ooding stress has become more prevalent during paddy growth stages as a result of climate change, especially in southern China. This study aims to assess the effect of alternate drought and fl ooding stress on water use, and nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) losses in paddy fi elds. Two controlled irrigation and drainage (CID) managements (namely drought at the beginning of growth stages followed by fl ooding (CID-1), and fl ooding at the beginning of growth stages followed by drought (CID-2) and one alternated wetting and drying (AWD) management were designed in specially designed experimental tanks with three replications in 2015 and 2016. Results showed that CID increased effective irrigation quantities and rainwater storage ability with a signifi cant decrease in water use effi ciency compared with AWD. For surface water, CID-1 signifi cantly improved possible losses of nitrogen and phosphorus during the fertilizer application period over CID-2. For subsurface water, CID can signifi cantly reduce the leaching losses of nitrate N and P compared with AWD. Meanwhile, CID-1 signifi cantly inc reased the leaching losses of nitrate N at the former two growth stages compared to CID-2, yet no signifi cant difference was found for ammonia N and P. Therefore, the application of controlled irrigation and drainage -especially for CID-1 -was an effi cient method for obtaining high water quality and reducing eutrophication.

Groundwater is considered a major source of drinking water and its quality a basis for good population health. In order to identify groundwater hydro-chemical characteristics and pollution conditions in Songnen Plain, groundwater hydro-chemical characteristics and nitrate-nitrogen (NO 3 -N) spatial distribution characteristics and the health risks were analyzed. Results showed that groundwater hydro-chemical type was mainly HCO 3 -Ca, which was associated with the action of calcite and silicate mineral weathering dissolution. The over standards rate of NO 3 -N accounted for 50.8%, the coeffi cient of variation was 183.57% which was high spatial variability, the high-risk area accounted for 88.78% of the total study area, and the high-risk area covered the area with water quality of classes IV, V, and part of class III. The high-risk area is mainly distributed in the eastern high plains and in the central low plains, while the low-risk zone accounts for only 11.22% of the total area and is mainly distributed in the western alluvial plain with scattered distribution in other areas.

Preferential flow significantly influences hydrological processes in forests. The occurrence and development of this flow is directly affected by its spatial distribution. To determine whether or not point pattern analysis method can be used to examine the horizontal spatial distribution of preferential flow paths, experiments were conducted with dye tracer permeation to observe flow processes. Results indicated that an increase in penetration water volume exerted only a specific effect on preferential flow paths of large class in the topmost soil. Moreover, such paths showed distinct clumped patterns at the 25-cm scale under both high permeation water volume and low permeation water volume treatments. Nonetheless, the distribution pattern became uniform as scale range increased. The significance of the correlation between the spatial distribution of preferential flow paths and plant roots decreased from the top soil layer to the bottom. These findings suggest that soil depth and water permeation volume are important to the horizontal spatial distribution of preferential flow paths. Moreover, point pattern analysis method is suitable for investigating the horizontal spatial distribution of preferential flow paths and determining the correlation between the spatial distribution of preferential flow paths and plant roots.Key words: preferential flow paths, brilliant blue dye tracing, spatial point pattern analysis RESUME L' écoulement préférentiel influence de façon significative les processus hydrologiques du milieu forestier. L' occurrence et le développement de cet écoulement est directement affecté par sa distribution spatiale. De façon à déterminer si oui ou non l'analyse du motif de points peut être utilisée pour étudier la distribution spatiale horizontale des réseaux d' écoule-ment préférentiel, des essais de diffusion ont été réalisés au moyen de colorants traceurs afin de suivre les processus d' écoulement. Les résultats ont indiqué qu'une augmentation du niveau de pénétration de l' eau exerçait un effet spécifique seulement sur les réseaux d' écoulement préférentiel de grande envergure situés dans le sol de surface. De plus, ces réseaux ont affichés des schémas agrégatifs distincts à l' échelle de 25 cm à la fois en présence d'un fort volume d' eau de pénétra-tion et d'un faible volume d' eau de pénétration. Néanmoins, le schéma de distribution est devenu uniforme avec l'augmentation de l' échelle. L'importance de la corrélation entre la distribution spatiale des réseaux d' écoulement préférentiel et les racines des plantes diminuait à partir de la couche de sol superficiel vers le bas. Ces observations indiquent que la profondeur du sol et le volume d' eau de pénétration sont importants au niveau de la distribution spatiale horizontale des réseaux d' écoulement préférentiel.
