Characteristics of Oilwell Cement Slurry Using CMC

Abstract: The effects of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) polymer with some other additives on Class G cement were investigated to design a slurry for a field in the south of Iran subject to tectonically induced horizontal in-situ stress. For a number of alternative slurries, characteristics such as compressive strength, permeability, free water, and fluid loss were examined. Fundamental theoretical studies and laboratory experiments were conducted using a system-based approach, endeavoring to minimize undesired properties … Show more

“…On the other hand, the gel strength of the cement slurries is high, which could be a problem at the time of pumping at the surface condition. The gel strength and viscosity of the slurries increases with increased concentration, which was due to the water absorption on its methoxyl group (Roshan & Asef, 2010). But the absorption of water and increase of viscosity keep the slurry stable at high temperature.…”

“…Cement has been used in drilling operations to restrict fluid movement between zones, protect casing from corrosion and closing abandoned portions of wells (Roshan & Asef, 2010). Additives and polymers have been used in oil well cementing to improve the properties of cement slurry.…”

“…These all cellulose-type polymers are used in different fields. Besides other applications, it has excellent usage in oil well cementing operations (Roshan and Asef 2010). Cement is the key material that has been used during drilling operation to provide zonal isolation, protect the casing string and provide the strength for installing wellhead (Pour and Moghadasi 2007).…”

“…Common additives for oil and gas well cementing operations comprise, heavy weight materials (barite), accelerators (calcium chloride), retarders (lignosulfonates), extenders (bentonite), fluid loss control additives (polymers) and loss circulation additives (fibrous materials), dispersants, friction reducers etc. (Bermudez, 2007;Roshan and Asef, 2010;Shadizadeh et al, 2010).…”
