Characteristics of LUCC patterns of the Lanzhou-Xining urban agglomeration:Based on an intensity analysis framework

Abstract: Based on the land use transition matrix, a criterion of land use types conversion trend in absolute quantity was established, and a land use/cover change (LUCC) intensity analysis framework was proposed to analyze the tendency and inhibition of the conversion trend between land use types and its impact on the land use/cover structure from the perspectives of absolute and relative intensity. [Methods] The LUCC intensity map was constructed to visually display the key LUCC modes. Taking the Lanzhou-Xining urban … Show more

“…The evaluation of vegetation coverage was heavily dependent on the transition matrix, which unfortunately only captured the increase or decrease in a particular vegetation type without providing an accurate explanation of the change process [29]. To address this limitation, we used intensity analysis [55] and intensity mapping [56] to analyze changes in vegetation coverage across three levels: time interval, category, and transition This approach allowed us to identify patterns and tendencies in vegetation changes. By understanding the current state of vegetation and its impact on the surrounding environment, we could develop strategies that promote sustainable practices.…”

“…Intensity map analyzes the intensity of transitions between different FVC levels during the same interval [56]. This method draws a map from the absolute/relative conversion intensity and intuitively interprets the conversion pattern in the same time interval.…”

“…Utilizing the methodology construction by Li [37], the LULC transition intensity was constructed. This method established criteria for determining trends in absolute quantities of land category transitions, assessing potential relationships between regional LULC structures and land class transformations.…”

“…Li delineated the inclinations and limitations of land category transfer in and out, examining both absolute and relative proportion levels. A map depicting LULCC intensity highlights key patterns in regional LULCC, meanwhile offering decision-making support for enhancing land resource management policies (Li et al, 2023b). Cao examined the driving mechanism for construction land use transfer using GIS platform, land use transfer matrix, expansion intensity index, hotspot analysis, and mathematical statistics (Cao et al, 2020).…”
