Liquefaction has proved to be one of the major geotechnical issues caused by earthquakes. It is one of the most costly phenomena and has afected several cities around the world. Although the topic has been studied since the 1960s, new questions are emerging. The earthquakes of Chile in 2010, New Zealand in 2010 and 2011, and Japan in 2011 had in common not only being some of the largest earthquakes of this decade but also having a problem of extensive liquefaction. Although most seismic codes have provisions against liquefaction, there are still some misconceptions regarding the characteristics of soil susceptibility and the efect of repeated liquefaction. This chapter introduces a detailed report of the damage caused by liquefaction in the cities afected by those earthquakes and also highlights observations in liqueied areas that were unexpected.Advanced geotechnical testing was conducted and compiled to compare them with previous assessment criteria and observations. A more comprehensive framework for the evaluation of liquefaction susceptibility and countermeasures will be presented and a roadmap of future work in the area will be described.

The major problems associated with liquefaction-induced ground subsidence are tilting of houses, buckling of roads, lifelines cut off, etc. For the mitigation and preparedness over the liquefaction-induced damage, a detailed study on prediction of ground subsidence for future earthquake is important. On the 11 th of March 2011, the Off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake (MW=9) hit Japan and caused severe liquefaction in Urayasu City, Chiba Prefecture. In this study, in order to investigate the relationship between liquefaction potential, PL, and liquefaction-induced subsidence which occurred in the 2011 earthquake, liquefaction assessment is first carried out by using a number of boreholes and relevant soil test data from Urayasu city. Then, the liquefaction-induced road subsidence is extracted from a set of the Digital Surface Models (DSMs) from airborne LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) surveys before (2006) and after (2011) the earthquake. The extracted subsidence from the DSMs indicates that the liquefaction-induced road subsidence is larger for the residential roads than that of the main roads, thus the relationship between PL and road subsidence is different for each type of road. Finally, an attempt is made to apply the obtained PL and road subsidence relations to attain a unique hazard map for Urayasu city.

The 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake caused massive ground damage, including liquefaction of sandy grounds, collapse of river levees and lands developed for housing, etc., particularly in regions across eastern Japan. Not only damage to "currently unqualified" structures that did not conform to existing design standards and codes but also ground damage that could not be explained within the framework of conventional geomechanics and geotechnical engineering was observed. Particularly in the latter case, therefore, it has become necessary to develop new techniques in geomechanics without being restrained by the conventional framework. From the above standpoint, this paper reviews the research that has been carried out in the field of geotechnology after the Great East Japan Earthquake. More specifically, new knowledge relating to the mechanism of liquefaction damage at Urayasu City and other ground deformation caused by the earthquake is introduced, together with the results of research carried out on ground strengthening techniques.
