Characteristics of individuals and long term reproducibility of dietary reports: The Tecumseh diet methodology study

Abstract: Food frequency reports in 1967-1969 were compared to frequency reports of the same foods asked retrospectively in 1982-1983 and 1967-1969 for 1184 respondents aged 45-64 years in the Tecumseh Community Health Study. The kappa statistic for concordance of the retrospective and baseline reports was used as a summary measure of the individual's ability to reproduce his or her earlier diet report. Reproducibility was estimated for total diet, represented by 83 foods, and for 9 subsets of foods of epidemiologic int… Show more

“…Participants' dietary habit might have changed during the follow-up period. However, previous studies reported that dietary pattern classification is moderately stable over long periods of time during adulthood [85][86][87][88][89][90]. Other limitations of the study include nonavailability of screening data, stage of disease at diagnosis for most cancers, and no evidence of DII being associated with inflammatory markers in this study.…”

“…We got dietary information at the time 5 years before. Thompson et al reported retrospective report of diet over the 15-year period was strongly related to the current report of diet [23]. Second, we used SAH patients admitted to hospitals as the case subjects, resulting in potential biases, particularly in the case selection.…”

“…One recognized limitation is that dietary data were collected by a single FFQ at baseline. However, adult dietary patterns appear to remain relatively stable over time (40-45) and there was no specific dietary intervention applied to participants during the course of the study. Also, evidence from other studies suggests that modest changes in diet over adulthood may have a minimal effect on estimated CRC risk (11).…”
