Characteristics of Streptococcus pyogenes strains isolated from Chinese children with scarlet fever

Abstract: The Streptococcus pyogenes isolates had high resistance rates against macrolides and tetracycline. They mainly expressed the ermB gene type and cMLSB phenotype. Their common emm types are emm1.0 and emm12.0, which have different frequencies of speA and speC.

“…Our results show that the isolates from paediatric patients in Chengdu city, Sichuan, China were resistant to erythromycin and clindamycin with 98.4%. The resistance rate was similar to that reported in two Children's Hospitals in Beijing and Shanghai in 2008 (97.9%), [9,10] but much higher than those in Sichuan province in the late 1990s (35.8%), French (22.4%) [11] Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh (38%) [12] and Italy (35.8%). [13] Meanwhile, our data shows that the isolates of GAS were resistant to tetracycline with 98.4%.…”

“…High resistance rates against macrolides were also observed for the outbreak in mainland China ( 8 ). We recommend close monitoring and surveillance of disease activity, genetic testing, antimicrobial susceptibility profiling, and maintaining scarlet fever’s statutory notifiable status.…”

“…Many children can also carry GAS or be asymptomatically infected ( 4 ). A recent study in China showed that GAS is commonly resistant to macrolides and tetracycline but sensitive to penicillin, chloramphenicol, cefradine, and ofloxacin ( 5 ). In Hong Kong, GAS emm type 12 dominated among the isolates cultured during 2011 ( 6 ).…”
