Characteristics of household activity and travel patterns in the Mumbai metropolitan region

Abstract: Activity-based modelling approaches require a typical survey instrument which can collect the finer details of activities of each individual over both time and space. This paper focuses on the design of a new survey instrument called an activity-travel diary; examines its method of administration; and analyses activity-travel behaviour in the context of developing countries. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region in India is selected as the study area. With the aim of understanding the activities of each individual ov… Show more

“…While 41.9 percent of the daily trips are made purely in active transport, 45.5 percent of the daily trips use public transport as a single mode of transport or along with other transport modes such as active, private, or intermediate public transport modes (see Table 4 ). The data indicates that public transport and active transport play a vital role in Mumbai's urban transport, as observed in other studies from the city ( Baker et al, 2005 ; Subbarao and Rao, 2014 )…”

“…With 4.69 household sizes observed in the data, the share of private vehicles per individual is approximately 12 percent. The vehicle ownership observed is relatively close to the vehicle ownership details mentioned in MCGM, 2016 and Subbarao and Rao (2014) . The collected demand data indicate that an individual's average trip rate (number of trips per person per day) on a weekday is 2.45 in the pre-pandemic period.…”

“…Firstly, with some exceptions (e.g. Dissanayake and Morikawa 2008 ; Jaff and Hamsa 2018 ; Subbarao and Rao 2014 ), little research has been carried out on the micro travel behavior data (i.e. people’s travel diary/history) in developing countries due to the costly nature of the tracing method.…”

“…Previous works on these options were completed in both developed and developing country settings (e.g. Neves and Brand 2019 ; Subbarao and Rao 2014 ), however, it will be relatively different in the context of a country where the majority of people use motorbikes as means of transport like Vietnam. The results of this study hence provide a better understanding of the importance of active travel modes in Vietnam.…”
