Characteristics of histamine‐induced leukocyte rolling in the undisturbed microcirculation of the rat mesentery

Abstract: 1 The main objective of this study was to analyse the role and mode of action of the mast cell mediator histamine in leukocyte-endothelium interactions in small venules in vivo. For this purpose, we used a histological approach (combined with intravital microscopy) that allows studies of rapid mediatorinduced venular leukocyte accumulation, re¯ecting leukocyte rolling, in the undisturbed microcirculation of the rat mesentery where rolling is normally absent. 2 We ®rst examined the relative importance of histam… Show more

“…H 2 antagonists impair neutrophil rolling in vitro (510), while other studies have shown the presence of immunostimulatory properties of H 2 antagonists (280,343,448). In preterm neonates, effects of H 2 antagonists and proton pump inhibitors on neutrophil function or cytokine production are probably overshadowed by their effect on pH and gastrointestinal tract colonization with potential pathogens.…”

“…The study of Yamaki et al suggests that serotonin was less active than exogenous histamine in evoking venular polimorphonuclear leukocyte accumulation 26 . Our data suggest that the regulation of CD45RA and CD62L is not related to the presence of serotonin or epinephrine, but depends on other mechanisms, such as the presence of IL-2 and the expression of IL-2R.…”

“…8 and 9). Neutrophil migration occurs in the postcapillary venules in tissues such as skin (10), mesentery (11), and upper airways (12,13). This process has been characterized in detail using intravital microscopy and involves selectin-mediated capture and rolling of neutrophils along the vessel wall, followed by CD18 (␤ 2 ) integrin-mediated firm adhesion and transendothelial migration (for review, see Ref.…”
