Characteristics of field-aligned currents near the auroral acceleration region: FAST observations

Abstract: A pilot statistical study of field-aligned currents (FACs), using an automated FAC-finding technique, has been performed on the magnetometer data from the Fast Auroral Snapshot (FAST) spacecraft. The strategy of this survey is to eliminate all intervals during which the magnetometer data are not consistent with flight through a stationary sheet-like current flowing parallel to the geomagnetic field, and then examine the statistical properties of those data that remain. This survey is sensitive to currents with… Show more

“…Strong, significant correlations were only observed for events when the ionospheric foot point of the current sheet was illuminated and not when it was in Figure 2. (opposite) The complete set of 'Region I' currents determined from the Peria et al [2000] data set. (a) All individual Region I currents plotted as red '+' (green 'x') points corresponding to currents out of (into) the ionosphere; (b) the average of the Region I current density in each MLT-ILAT bin (for bins with more than 10 Region I current sheets).…”

“…The algorithm, utilized on approximately every tenth orbit from October 1996 through January 1998, examined the magnetic field perturbations for consistency with a steady fieldaligned current sheet. Details are given by Peria et al [2000]. The resulting database covers all local times, and altitudes from $300 to $4300 km.…”

“…In order to use this method correctly, strict selection schemes must be applied [Peria et al, 2000]. There must be other data supporting the assumption that the observed current is spatial and 'sheetlike'.…”

“…Measurements from the FAST spacecraft include many observations of sheet currents where the current density as measured by the magnetometer is quantitatively consistent with the current carriers measured by the electron detectors [Peria et al, 2000, Carlson et al, 1998]. Observations of AlfvĂ©nic activity from Polar [Wygant et al, 2000;Keiling et al, 2001], Freja [Louarn et al, 1994], and rocket data [Knudsen et al, 1990[Knudsen et al, , 1992 include many examples of electric and magnetic field fluctuations which clearly satisfy conditions for AlfvĂ©n wave activity.…”
