“…4B and Table 2), it is possible that the NDH1 route in total is also sensitive to HgCl 2 . Mi et al 7) have reported that HgCl 2 inhibited the NDH1 route. The low sensitivity of the NDH1 route to HgCl 2 found in the present experiment might be due to remaining reductants on the reducing side of PSI under the experimental conditions, due to the presence of other reductants of NAD þ , or due to differences in the experimental conditions for the measurement of cyclic electron flow and the NAD(P)H oxidase activities.…”

“…The other pathway is from Fd to the plastoquinone pool via an unidentified component(s) designated ferredoxin-quinone reductase (FQR). 3,7) In this route, electrons go into the cyclic pathway from Fd without passing through FNR. Thus, there are two electron input sites for cyclic pathways on the acceptor side of PSI; one is FNR and the other is Fd.…”

“…Bendall and co-workers have analyzed cyclic electron transport in an assay system very similar to the one used in the present study (Cleland and Bendall, 1992;Manasse and Bendall, 1993). However, they monitored changes in A due to redox changes of Fd rather than of P700 and they routinely used high concentrations of reduced Fd.…”

“…The data presented here show that flavodoxin and Fd are similar in their ability to mediate the antimycin-insensitive pathway of cyclic electron transport, whereas Fd is more efficient in mediating the antimycinsensitive pathway. In cyanobacteria, antimycin-sensitive cyclic electron transport has not been found (Manasse and Bendall, 1993), and therefore Fd and flavodoxin may perform equally well as catalysts of cyclic electron transport in these organisms. Obviously, this suggestion needs to be tested with cyanobacterial thylakoids.…”

“…This antimycin A sensitive reaction (shown as 9) has also been designated to chloroplasts. We still lack part of the information, however, on the protein(s) involved in the transfer of electrons from ferredoxin to PQ, the so called FQR activity (Manasse & Bendall 1993). Recent studies have indicated that this type of cyclic reaction in cyanobacteria may not occur at all, or only at a minor scale, a conclusion very well in line with the puzzling observations on the effectiveness of antimycin A inhibition in cyanobacteria (Jeanjean R, personal communication).…”
