Characteristics of Confined Blast Loading in Unvented Structures

Abstract: Confined blast loading occurs in many scenarios and the effects of confined blast loading may result in more serious damage to buildings due to multiple shock reflections (Shi et al. 2009). However, spherical charges are assumed for all confined explosive-effects computations in modern standards for blast-resistant design such as UFC-3-340-02 (2008) and the soon-to-be published ASCE Standard for the Blast Protection of Buildings (ASCE forthcoming) without consideration of effects of charge shape on the distrib… Show more

“…With the rising threat of terrorism, protection of important buildings against bomb attacks is getting more attention (Wu et al, 2010, Hu et al 2011). Newly developed aluminium foams, which consists of solid phase, metal cells with various closed cell sizes and wall thickness, and gas phase with a kind of gas (usually air) filled in these cells, are mobile and lightweight materials with excellent plastic energy absorbing characteristics.…”

“…Confined environments may occur in many scenarios such as tunnels and subway stations or within car parks and basements of buildings or due to an accidental explosion within an ammunition storage bunker, or in a building with strong glass panels or even in city streets [1][2][3][4]. As confined spaces magnify the effects of explosions, the evaluation of confined *Corresponding author.…”
