Characteristics of children admitted to hospital with acute SARS-CoV-2 infection in Canada in 2020

Abstract: Background: Risk factors for severe outcomes of SARS-CoV-2 infection are not well established in children. We sought to describe pediatric hospital admissions associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection in Canada and identify risk factors for more severe disease. Methods: We conducted a national prospective study using the infrastructure of the Canadian Paediatric Surveillance Program (CPSP). Cases involving children who were admitted to hospital with microbiologically confirm… Show more

“… 25 Similarly, while 20% of youths hospitalized in a US-based retrospective cohort study had severe or very severe disease, 17 in a prospective Canadian study of 150 hospitalized SARS-CoV-2–positive youths, 50% had severe or critical illness. 26 Thus, an understanding of the study population is crucial to interpreting risk estimates. Our study population provides a risk estimate for youths brought for ED care.…”

“…Infants (37%) and adolescents (30%) represented most cases. Among COVID-19-related hospitalizations, 35% had the critical disease, and 28% of them required respiratory or hemodynamic support, with 39% having at least one underlying comorbidity [ 53 - 55 ]. Another Canadian study included 1632 participants providing samples from 30 day cares, 22 primary schools, and 11 secondary schools.…”

“…5 COVID-19 vaccination in children and youth is important for multiple reasons. First and foremost: to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection and the risk of rare complications of SARS-CoV-2 (e.g., multisystem inflammatory syndrome), 6 hospitalization, post-COVID condition, 7,8 and also to prevent community spread as children have been shown to transmit SARS-CoV-2 to other children or adults. 2,9 Vaccination against COVID-19 has been shown to reduce SARS-CoV-2 viral shedding and the likelihood of SARS-CoV-2 transmission within household thus vaccinating children and youth will decrease their likelihood of transmitting SARS-CoV-2, 10 leading to reduced overall transmission within school settings and in the community.…”
