Characteristics of biofilms and iron corrosion scales with ground and surface waters in drinking water distribution systems

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThe composition of biofilm bacterial communities and iron corrosion scales were studied in two drinking water distribution systems transporting groundwater (DWDS-GW) and surface water (DWDS-SW). Loose corrosion products were formed containing a-FeOOH in DWDS-GW, while dense crystallized particles were formed in DWDS-SW, including a-FeOOH, Fe 3 O 4 and CaCO 3 . The biofilms in the two systems had the same bacterial diversity, denitrifying functional genes and 16S rRNA gene copies, but the bacteri… Show more

“…During chloramine disinfection periods in pipe A (A2), more crystalline goethite together with thick rounded crystals formed. For initial pipe B (B0), acicular goethite crystals predominated in the iron pipe surfaces, and its presence is indicative of more fragile corroding layers [10,17], while rounded formations were formed in a thick layer on pipes with disinfectant treatment (B1, B2).…”

“…The main mechanisms of corrosion inhibition take place on metal surfaces when the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) of the biofilm impede the dissolution of Fe 2+ corrosion products [14]. Several researches reported the capacity of IRB/NRB to inhibit corrosion [10,15]. Therefore, microorganisms may play an important role in the occurrence and inhibition of red water.…”
