Characteristics of Biofilm Formation Process in the Bioelectrochemical Systems, Working in Batch Mode of Cultivation

Abstract: Abstract.1 A short overview of the formation methods of the biofilm with high exoelectrogens activity, which includes alternate partial and complete changes of culture medium, was done in the article. The influence of adaptation processes on electric current generation during the exoelectrogens biofilm formation was analyzed. The article also describes the reasons of sharp current variation, which appeared after nutrient medium changes.

“…The isolation of a novel electrogenic strain NIT-T3 of the genus Desulfuromonas and its respiration-ability specific to solid minerals suggests the adaptation of the genus to solid minerals or conductor-driven metabolism [ 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ]. The ability to grow on solid minerals and electrodes is supported by the presence of seven extracellular c -type cytochromes ( Figure 5 ), and conductive pilin (PilA)-homologs and full sets of T4P-assembly genes in the genome ( Figure 6 ).…”

“…The genus Desulfuromonas has received much attention as a common electrogenic bacteria present in BESs [ 8 , 9 , 10 ]. Desulfuromonas species are found in natural environments, such as aquifers [ 11 ], sediment cores [ 12 ], and terrestrial mud volcanoes [ 13 ], suggesting a wide distribution.…”

“…There is a certain number of techniques for formation of biofilm with exoelectrogenic activity. They are based on supporting of conditions that can promote the development of exoelectrogens and suppress other bacteria [13][14][15][16][17].…”
